In the smartphone age, when romantic hookups happen in a flash, the technology itself has been blamed for an increase in sexually transmitted diseases.

In May, Utah and Rhode Island health authorities made headlines by blaming hookup apps for a sharp increase in STDs, including HIV and syphilis, among young people. Whether the apps are to blame likely requires more study, but certainly the mechanisms for finding a sexual partner have changed and accelerated the process.

Online Hookup Apps and Anonymous Sex. When two people meet online, they might not know each other’s real name or address, and they probably aren’t aware of any STDs the other person might be carrying. People who meet for anonymous sex and who don’t use condoms run the greatest risk of contracting a sexually-transmitted disease.

Thus, the idea of accelerating the process of checking one's sexual health is a good idea, though the clinical system for doing that had remained mired in a system as archaic as snail mail.

In this day especially, knowing one's sexual health before entering a sexual relationship is the responsible thing to do.

For Dorian Just of Miami Beach, Fla., getting results for STD or HIV tests at her local clinic took two appointments — one to take the tests and one to retrieve the results. 'It was time and money; the clinic charged me co-pays for each visit,' she said.

Now that the clinic uses new Healthvana software, though, she receives HIV results immediately and can access her STD results from the lab by cellphone or email.

'It takes about a week, as opposed to the two weeks I used to have to wait for the second appointment,' Just said.

Focusing on sexually transmitted diseases made sense because of the popularity of dating apps, said Ramin Bastani, CEO of Los Angeles-based Healthvana. 'The apps make it simple to meet people and hook up,' he said. 'But people want to be able to tell their new partners that they've tested negative for STDs and HIV as soon as possible.'

Before clinics used his software, Bastani said, 'The patient was told, 'We'll call you if anything is wrong,' he explained. 'So he was left waiting, not knowing if the doctor didn't have the results yet or if his results were negative. Now he gets the results as soon as the doctor gets them from the lab. With HIV, he gets them instantly because that test is done in the doctor's office.'

Patients who receive a positive result on an HIV test are referred to a counselor to review treatment options.

The software enables patients to share proof of their health status with partners. 'One patient posted his test results on Instagram,' Bastani said.

Clinics buy the software from Healthvana, so the service is free to patients.

In addition to test results, the software issues reminders for subsequent tests and provides education about diseases for which patients are tested.

Healthvana software is used by 12 AIDS Healthcare Foundation clinics in California and Florida. By the end of 2015, it will be available through 24 AHF clinics in seven states.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 million people in this country are diagnosed each year with chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis. Half are ages 15 to 24.

About 47,000 people are diagnosed with HIV each year, the CDC said. The highest incidence is among people ages 25 to 34, followed by ages 13 to 24.

Next, Healthvana plans to add software that enables patients to view results of other medical information, such as vaccination records, plus results of other tests, such as Pap smears, Bastani said.

Business is brisk because Healthvana helps clinics run more efficiently, Bastani said, adding, 'They tell us Healthvana helps them treat patients quicker because they don't have to field all the calls they used to get from patients asking if their results were ready yet.'

Patients 'feel empowered' by having access to their records, he said, 'instead of feeling like their records are being held hostage.'

Said Just: 'You shouldn't be kept waiting for information that's so important.'

A new iPhone app has been designed to make getting tested for STDs easier. Hula, the free app directs users to the nearest STD testing center, allows users to receive their test results on their phone and even share their results with partners, which takes the awkwardness out of having the “Have you been tested?” conversation.

According to TIME, the creators of the app are trying to make getting tested not only easier, but also serving faster test results. With clinics across the country being short staffed, waiting to get results can take weeks with a lot of sexually active people opting for the “no news is good news” as their answer for their sexual heath, not knowing that even those who test positive for results are often not notified.
Hula makers want to fix this broken system by allowing clinics the option of sending the lab results to users and translating the lab jargon into plain English. So that means that a result for “non-reactive Syphilis” simply comes up as negative.

But there are legal and privacy concerns that have been brought up. Some health experts think while the results do come with a time stamp, it offers false hope to sexually active couples because someone can obtain an STD in the time frame they may receive their results. Unfortunately, the same can happen with paper results.
