Teachers often shell out from their own wallets for classroom supplies and rely on donations to help make up shortfalls.

A survey by Business Insider in 2019 found that among 31 teachers across 19 different states, some admitted spending as much as $1,000 on their classrooms.

The ten teachers were able to keep the cash and the biggest winner was Harrisburg High School teacher Barry Longden who managed to stuff $616 into his t-shirt.

He told the local paper he planned on spending the cash on the school's burgeoning e-sports club.

'Getting that equipment for the kids is really just the big component of what gives them access to this because otherwise, it's really accessible for most kids,' Longden said.

'I've been throwing my name in the hat everywhere I can find so that way I can get opportunities to get money for the kids,' he added.

Alexandria Kuyper, a fifth-grade teacher at Discovery Elementary School, managed to grab $592 from the pile of bills.

She said that while her school had a Parent-Teacher Organization that facilitated funding for classroom supplies, smaller items like Christmas decorations, could add up.

'I think it's really cool when the community offers an opportunity like this for things that educations a lot of times pay out of pocket for,' she told the Argus Leader.
